WWDD? What would a dog do?

Bella has the remarkable ability to be present. She’s doesn't about what she did yesterday or plan for tomorrow. Each stick is a new treasure and each sniff opens a whole new world. Her mind is not cluttered with “what ifs.” Instead, she focuses on the here and now, whether that means savoring a cuddle or watching a leaf.

Between my to-do lists, emails, and social media it’s easy for me to be distracted and lose sight of what’s truly important. But like Bella, I can choose to let go of the distractions and focus on the present.

I’m constantly humbled by the way she relishes the simple pleasures of life… a tasty treat, a favorite toy, or a friend she sees. Bella doesn’t worry about how long her joy will last or whether she deserves it. She simply soaks in the moment.

She doesn’t dwell on what happened five minutes ago or worry about what might happen tomorrow. If she gets scolded, she quickly forgets and returns to offering affection. If she misplaces a favorite toy, she’ll move on to another.

In contrast, I often get stuck in regret or anticipation. I would like to let go of thinking about the past and future and allow myself to enjoy whatever moment I’m in without the weight of what has been or what might be.

Bella is an expert at connecting with others. When she greets someone, she’s not distracted by her phone or thinking about the next thing on her list. She is fully engaged in the interaction. I’d like to channel that energy regularly, give someone my full attention, listen actively, and be mindful of their words. Whenever I do, the richness of the connection comes through because I was truly present.

When I observe her on our walks she's fully engaged in the experience—feeling the grass beneath her paws, sniffing the air, or getting the zoomies. She is such a great teacher!

I can practice being more like her by:

  • Taking breaks to breathe: Just like Bella stretches after a nap or enjoys a leisurely walk; I can take moments to pause throughout my day. Use these moments to breathe deeply, stretch, or simply enjoy the present.

  • Limiting distractions: When I’m interacting with someone or doing something important, I can put down my phone, stop scrolling, and focus on what is in front of me. Bella doesn’t multi-task; neither should I. LOL.

  • Practicing gratitude: Bella is thankful for the smallest things. Just stopping and petting her for a moment makes her moan and groan her appreciation. She’s very vocal. Hahahaha.

  • Letting go of perfectionism: Bella doesn’t strive for perfection; she simply exists. I can give myself permission to not have everything figured out and focus on what I’m doing in the moment.

There’s a reason dogs are often referred to as “man’s best friend.” They not only offer unconditional love and companionship, but they also teach us some of life’s most profound lessons. By embracing their ability to live fully in the present moment, we can enrich our own lives in ways we never thought possible. So, the next time you find yourself overwhelmed or lost in thought, take a moment to pause and ask yourself WWDD? What would a dog do?
